Neuropathy

Nerve damage in the feet can develop gradually, often leading to uncomfortable sensations and reduced awareness that can affect your balance and safety. At Pomona Valley Podiatry, Dr. Brian O’Neill carefully evaluates nerve function, circulation, and underlying conditions to determine the cause of your symptoms. His goal is to reduce discomfort, protect your feet from injury, and help you maintain stable, confident movement.

Neuropathy

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy affects the nerves in the foot and ankle, disrupting normal sensation and communication between the nerves and brain. It may develop due to chronic irritation, compression, injury, or systemic conditions that impact nerve health (such as Diabetes). Clinically known as Peripheral Neuropathy, this condition is characterized by damage to the peripheral nerves, leading to altered sensation, pain, and sometimes weakness. Patients often experience numbness, tingling or “pins and needles,” burning pain, sharp or electric-like sensations, increased sensitivity to touch, and a reduced ability to feel temperature changes.

Common symptoms of Neuropathy

    • Numbness or reduced ability to feel touch
    • Tingling or “pins and needles” sensations
    • Burning pain, constant or intermittent
    • Sharp, stabbing, or electric-like pain
    • Increased sensitivity to touch
    • Loss of temperature sensation

How We Treat Neuropathy

Neuropathy is diagnosed through an evaluation of symptoms, along with testing of sensation, reflexes, and circulation in the feet, and assessment of underlying conditions (such as Diabetes). Additional testing, including nerve conduction studies or laboratory work, may be used to confirm the diagnosis and identify contributing factors. Early-stage cases are typically managed with protective foot care and regular monitoring to reduce the risk of injury. Moderate cases may benefit from medications, topical treatments, and supportive footwear to improve comfort and safety. More advanced Neuropathy often requires coordinated care to manage symptoms, address underlying causes, and prevent complications such as ulcers or infections.
