Neuroma

Living with nerve-related foot pain can make every step feel uncomfortable, especially when it interferes with your ability to stay active. At Pomona Valley Podiatry, Dr. Brian O’Neill uses a detailed diagnostic approach to identify the source of irritation and determine whether a Neuroma is causing your symptoms. His goal is to relieve nerve pain, restore comfort, and help you return to normal activity without ongoing discomfort.

Neuroma

What is Neuroma?

A Neuroma most commonly affects the nerves in the foot and toes, developing when a nerve becomes compressed, irritated, or thickened over time. Often referred to as Morton’s Neuroma, this condition is frequently linked to tight footwear, high-impact activities, or biomechanical issues such as flat feet or high arches. Clinically, a Neuroma involves nerve irritation that leads to pain, tingling, or altered sensation in the forefoot. Patients often notice burning pain in the ball of the foot, sharp or radiating discomfort into the toes, numbness, a “pins and needles” feeling, or the sensation of walking on a pebble or something inside the shoe.

Common symptoms of Neuroma

    • Burning pain in the ball of the foot
    • Sharp or shooting pain that may radiate into the toes
    • Tingling or “pins and needles” sensation
    • Numbness in the affected toes
    • Feeling as if there’s a pebble or lump in your shoe
    • Relief when removing shoes or massaging the foot

How We Treat Neuroma

Neuroma is diagnosed through an evaluation of symptoms and physical examination, including tests that reproduce pain between the toes, confirmed with imaging such as ultrasound or MRI. The early stages of treatment often involves footwear changes, padding, and orthotics to reduce pressure on the affected nerve. More persistent cases may require anti-inflammatory medications or targeted injections to relieve irritation. Severe or long-standing Neuromas can be treated with surgical procedures to decompress or remove the affected nerve.
