Heel Pain
Heel pain can make even the simplest steps uncomfortable, often interfering with your daily routine and overall mobility. At Pomona Valley Podiatry, Dr. Brian O’Neill conducts a detailed evaluation to identify the source of your discomfort and determine the underlying cause. His goal is to relieve pain, restore function, and help you move comfortably again.

What is Heel Pain?
Heel pain affects the heel, foot, and sometimes the Achilles tendon, and is commonly caused by repetitive stress, overuse, or strain on the supporting structures of the foot. It is most often associated with Plantar Fasciitis, a condition involving inflammation or degeneration of the Plantar Fascia, though it may also be linked to Achilles Tendinitis or other soft tissue issues. Clinically, heel pain refers to discomfort localized at the bottom or back of the heel due to inflammation, micro-tearing, or mechanical overload. Patients often experience sharp, stabbing pain with the first steps in the morning, tenderness when pressure is applied, stiffness in the foot or ankle, swelling, and discomfort that may improve briefly with movement but worsen after prolonged standing or walking.

How We Treat Heel Pain
Heel pain is diagnosed through a review of symptoms and medical history, along with a physical examination to assess tenderness, inflammation, and movement-related discomfort. A diagnosis is sometimes supported by imaging such as X-rays or ultrasound to identify the underlying condition. Less severe cases often respond well to stretching, supportive footwear, and activity modification to reduce strain on the heel. Moderate cases may benefit from custom orthotics, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory treatments, while more persistent or severe cases can require immobilization, targeted injections, or other advanced therapies, with surgery considered only when conservative measures are unsuccessful.
